Opening an EasyEquities account for your child

How to open a child's investment account so relatives can give towards it — by transfer, or with a voucher that needs no account of their own.

This is the rail worth setting up. It costs nothing to hold — the R25 a month Thrive fee is waived for under-21s — and once it exists, a relative can put money into your child's future instead of buying another plastic thing. You need your own account first, then you add the child's underneath it.

What to do

  1. Open your own account and complete FICAYou are the one who is verified. The child's account sits under yours until they turn 18, when it converts to them.
  2. Profile menu → “Add an account for your kid”It is in the profile menu of your own account, not a separate signup.
  3. Enter the child's details, including their SA ID numberThis is the step that catches people out: you need the child's ID number, which comes through at about two to three months old. Before that, you cannot open the account.
  4. Wait for verificationElectronic, usually a few hours and at most 24. You get two emails: one confirming the account, one when it is live.

Then, in Giftling

Add the account to your child's Giftling page under Investments — platform, account number, holder and reference. Givers see those as copyable rows and can pay by EFT. Mark the platform as EasyEquities and they also get a voucher button.

Worth knowing

Before you redeem anything

Redeem gifts into the child's ordinary (ZAR) account, not a tax-free savings account. Tax-free limits are R46,000 a year and R500,000 for life, they count across every provider a child holds an account with, and going over costs a 40% penalty on the excess. A registry is exactly the thing that tips someone over — several relatives, twice a year. Giftling cannot see a child's other accounts and never tracks how much of the allowance is left.

You do not have to do any of this

None of this is required. A bank transfer already works on your child's page, arrives whole, and costs nobody a fee — these rails are only for families who want givers to have another way to pay.
