Adding your Zapper QR

How to get a Zapper merchant QR so givers can pay from almost any banking app — and why bank transfer is still fine.

As with SnapScan: you do not need this. Bank transfer already works and costs nothing. Zapper is worth the trouble for one reason — Zapper QR codes are scannable by most South African banking apps, including Absa, Capitec, FNB, Nedbank, TymeBank and VodaPay, so a giver does not need any particular app installed. Zapper also onboards you as a business and accepts sole proprietors, and the same unresolved question applies: a parent receiving birthday money is not obviously a merchant.

What to do

  1. Apply as a merchant at ZapperSole proprietors are accepted. Business details and documents are part of it.
  2. Open the Zapper merchant app once you are approvedYour QR lives there.
  3. Save your QR as an imageDownload or screenshot it. A clear, uncropped picture works best.

Then, in Giftling

Upload the image on your child's bank account in Giftling. We read the code out of the picture, check it is really a Zapper one, and draw a fresh code from what we read — we never republish the picture you uploaded. If we cannot verify it, we say so rather than showing givers a code we cannot vouch for.

Worth knowing

You do not have to do any of this

None of this is required. A bank transfer already works on your child's page, arrives whole, and costs nobody a fee — these rails are only for families who want givers to have another way to pay.
